Η σημερινή ημέρα είναι αφιερωμένη από την Ρωσική Ομοσπονδία στις Ειδικές Δυνάμεις. Πρόκειται για τους γνωστούς Spetsnaz. Η μεγαλύτερη αναδιοργάνωση των Ρωσικών Ειδικών Δυνάμεων έλαβε χώρα το 2006 με πρωτοβουλία του Βλάντιμιρ Πούτιν. Οι ρίζες των Spetsnaz ανάγονται στις 24 Οκτωβρίου 1956 όταν επι ΕΣΣΔ συγκροτήθηκαν 24 μονάδες ειδικού σκοπού με πρωτοβουλία του τότε υπουργού άμυνας M. Vasilevsky. Πρόκειται για το τους πρόγονους των Spetsnaz.
Σήμερα μονάδες κατηγορίας Spetsnaz διαθέτουν τα Ρωσικά Υπουργεία Άμυνας, Δικαιοσύνης, Εσωτερικών και συγκεκριμένα η FSB με τις κωδικές ονομασίες «knight», «alpha», «banner». Τα καθήκοντας τους άπτονται από την αντιτρομοκρατία μέχρι τον ανορθόδοξο πόλεμο.
